2. How did you get started, what inspired your business?

After years of service in government and industry I started BGS to provide high value support and services to missions of national importance. I wanted to work with the best people and deliver the best solutions and best value for those challenging missions that support our nations competitiveness and security. I began as a research scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and slowly transitioned to environmental and technology project management. I joined the Department of Energy as a Senior Executive and then serviced as an executive with several energy related fortune 500 firms. The desire to work with the best talent and to be engaged in exciting missions of national importance inspired BGS.

3. What factors do you attribute to your growth last year?

Our growth last year can be attributed to the passion, dedication, and hard work of our outstanding personnel. By building a company with the best talent, high value capabilities, a sound business foundation, and strong relationships we were able to establish a reputation for high performance and demonstrate the ability to deliver on challenging jobs and provide value for clients. Our capabilities coupled with those of strong teaming partners have allowed us to win and perform on some of the most sought-after small business contracts with the Department of Energy.

4. How do you see your company evolving and/or what are your plans to sustain that growth in the future?

Our goal is to mature and develop capabilities that allow us to be engaged is the most challenging and exciting science, technology, environmental and security missions. Our growth and sustainability will be the result of having the best talent, high value capabilities, strong market position, a sound business foundation, and durable relationships with valued clients and highly capable business partners.

5. Are there any aspects of operating in the Knoxville region that has been instrumental in your growth?

I have often said that BGS could not have grown without the unique features of the Knoxville/Oak Ridge business community. BGS relies on access to the best talent that thrives in a community with a premier national laboratory, a strong university, unique enterprises like TVA and the Y-12 Complex, and the many engineering and technology firms that are clients, partners, and supporters of BGS. The local banking community understands the challenges of small businesses and the requirements of the government market. The right banking relationship can support growth and open the door to opportunity. The US Small Business Administration (SBA), the University of Tennessee, and other local and regional groups provide vital support to small business development. Together these factors make the Knoxville Region a unique energy, technology, and entrepreneurial environment that can catalyze and provide opportunity for a unique kind of small business.
