Fighting for Your Workforce

There is no doubt that the fight for talent is on.  According to The Voice of the Blue-Collar Worker Survey, 47% of workers would consider another job opportunity. The survey also cites company culture as a top reason that workers choose to stay with an employer.  How can employers shape culture into one that both retains talent and that new talent seeks?

Your Company Values: Developing and adopting core values provides your team a footprint for making important business decisions. If these core values are ingrained in everyday business functions, you will develop a more loyal and cohesive team. A loyal and cohesive team is a dedicated team. And, talent will seek an environment with strong core values that align with their goals.

Ask for Feedback: Employees want to feel heard. Developing a feedback loop that not only gathers opinions but considers them, is a powerful tool to build employee relationships and trust. It is one thing to listen to an employee and another to act on what you have heard. A collaborative environment where all opinions matter will both attract and retain talent.

Employee Recognition: While this seems simple, let’s look it with a twist. Celebrating every victory, even the small ones, shows your team that you value their efforts. Sometimes this can mean celebrating the failures too. How is that? Risk is a part of innovation. And with risk, comes failure. A culture that allows for risk, brews creativity and growth.

Trust: Trust is key to coaching and developing team members. According to The Voice of the Blue-Collar Worker Survey, 31% of workers stated that they have the goal of becoming a lead or supervisor in their current industry within the next 2-3 years. Trusting that your team is capable and developing both individual and team weaknesses is crucial to allowing these opportunities. Current team members and job seekers are looking for a growth path that they can trust.

An Inclusive Environment: The workforce is changing. Employers must evolve to retain talent and expand their candidate pool. Employees want leaders that make a difference by valuing individual differences. Developing an inclusive environment means challenging assumptions, delegating opportunity with thoughtfulness, resolving conflict equitably, among other concepts. An inclusive environment will open your candidate pool by attracting a more diverse group of candidates. An environment where everyone belongs is key to retention.

Employee Well-Being: Well-Being includes many factors from physical, mental, to developmental. You may trust your team, use inclusive language, and recognize efforts but if the tasks that are required to be successful are not in their physical, mental, or developmental well-being, then your efforts go in vain. It is important to recognize what is in your team members best interest without making assumptions or limiting growth. Team members are loyal to leaders that have their well-being as priority.
