Knoxville Chamber's Frightful Sight Race Raises Money for United Way

The Knoxville Chamber held its first annual Frightful Sight Race on Friday, October 23 on Market Square in downtown Knoxville. Chamber Vice President of Membership Mark Field, Vice President of Economic Development Doug Lawyer, Government Relations and Marketing Director Garrett Wagley, Business Development Manager Doug Minter and Communications Coordinator Justin Kropff wore high heels, skirts and tights during the competition.

"I didn't know if I'd make it to the finish line without falling," said Lawyer, the event's champion. "I was shocked to come away with the Golden Heel Medal."

Lawyer wasn't the only person shocked at the race. Seeing five area businessmen dressed in women's clothing on Market Square wasn't the most attractive scene. It was however a great way to raise money for the United Way of Greater Knoxville. A half dozen similar events are held each October to raise money for those in need in the region.

"Having five of our male employees dress up and race in high heels sounded like a fun way to raise money and we sure were right about that,” said Chamber Senior Account Executive Ashleigh Adkins. “We try to come up with new and creative ideas each year that help in the Chamber's United Way fundraising effort."

The chamber is close to its $9,200 fundraising goal. A company Halloween costume-contest to raise additional dollars is planned for October 30.
